I have lived for many years in a house with a fosse septique,following certain rules, mainly no bleach or toilet smelliest, the fosse should not need emptying as the microbes take care if everything. In 25 years the fosse, catering for a household if between 5-7 people, has been emptied once, that was due to heavy rain and the water in the soakway having no where to go backed up into the fosse. I have found most houses, particularly the older houses in Spain have a fosse etange (soakaway), these do need periodically pumping out. Once installed a fosse etange or fosse septique is seldom removed, if not required they are usually emptied then filled with concrete and left.
