He must have known his actions would create controversy, regardless of fine legal definitions. Why didn’t he therefore come clean and explain to the press his actions before he made his trip? Or was he hoping nobody would find out?

Maybe that's why Stephen Kinnock got away with it. He was stupid enough to brag about breaking lockdown by posting a photro on Twitter of delivering his gormless father a birthday card

Not that I like the guy at all I've read an article this morning which throws a different light on the subject. Apparently he and his wife were both ill so the only alternatives they had for protecting their child was to take him to his parents or put him in the hands of social services. They took the child to its grandparents and isolated themselves in a separate cottage away from them.
The paper said that although not complying strictly with the lockdown rules it was a more excusable reason than Neil Ferguson visiting his lover and the Scottish Health Secretary visiting her second home.
Just putting it out there as a different take on it.

Sorry but if both were ill they should have isolated at home, and not take the chance of spreading the virus to anyone else, the child would probably be infected if both had, but Cummings did not have it. Sorry but he did Not follow rules but seems the normal for a lot of people and not just politicians to look for loopholes to break.

Cummings is not exactly on the poverty line.
If he, his wife or child were sick I feel sure that, as he is in London with lots of options, he could have hired a nurse from BUPA or similar to take care of them.... he really did NOT need to drive 200 miles to find someone to care for them..t
There is simply no excuse.
