TAX on goods from UK

As an update on the Samsung phone replacement which was being sent from UK under the new customs regime. Well the phone was posted in London on 11th January with International Tracked & Signed. I could see that it was being held by The National Returns Centre as it had been identified as possibly containing dangerous goods and had to be opened and checked. The phone arrived today 22nd Jan having been opened and repackaged with a letter from Royal Mail headed "Royal Mail Security screening - undeclared dangerous goods" explaining why they opened it. It had a sticker on the outside of the package also saying it was identified as possibly containing dangerous goods ....etc. The Postman must think I am some kind of subversive I don't know if this is normal practice by Royal Mail but I have never come across it before. The good news - no charges of any kind applied on either side not even the dreaded VAT.

I think they like to know what’s in the package as that dictates surface or air mail

Thanks for the explanation. I suppose now with the CN22 customs declaration form they know what's in the package.
