Leak Tech were called, and "discovered" an underground leak under the bottom drain. €250 call-out, and a quote for €850 to fix it.

I then called Lee from Poolology, who confirmed no underground leak, but found that the seal around the pool light cable had worked its way loose. €50 to sort it.

Leak Tech insisted they were correct, and were quite rude when insisting on their call out fee being paid.

That was 18 months ago. No problems since, and bills of around €40 to €60 per quarter ever since.

The insurance company paid the €700 water bill.

I know it's not allowed to negatively comment on companies (particularly those who the majority seem to love)...but Leak Tech should be avoided.

Do you mind telling me which insurance company you are with?

Of course.

It's with Liberty Seguros.

The following years' policy was €5 more, so I was very impressed.

Rightmove dealt with it all too..and from them putting in the claim, it took just 3 days for the payment to be in my bank account.

Some 15 years ago we came back from a day out to find our pool overflowing down the street. It was ok when we went out! The pool's auto filler ballcock had stuck. I wedged up the ballcock and have never used the auto filler since, I just use a hose pipe when necessary.

I also then started to check the meter every week (ish). A year later the wheel was spinning again. It wasn't the auto filler so I dug up the garden - just soil, fortunately, not a patio, and located and repaired the leak. I was 14 years younger then, mind.

A year later it happened again. I thought sod this and bought some water piping and ran it overground from the meter to the house stopcock around the edge of the garden, just lightly covered with chippings. It was very easy, and cheap as chips. I left the old redundant pipe where it was, buried.

Now, If I ever think it's raining when it shouldn't be, I'll know I've got a leak. But I still check the meter weekly (ish).

This happened to me last year. I had a bill for £3000 euros. I got onto my insurance company Liberty they gave me the number for Leak Tech 966 194 179 or email www.leak-tech.net they are English speaking. They came out to property and found leak and repaired it. I sent bill And photos of repair and had money and a £1000 euros towards bill paid into my bank account with in two days. The water company let me pay the bill in instalments over 18 months and I have made a claim to town hall to see if I would be entitled to a refund. I am still waiting to here from town hall but with coronavirus they must have a backlog of claims especial with the floods. I am also in UK and was very worried but this company were very helpful and spoke English. We always turn our water off inside the property but it has taught us a valuable lesson it is now turned off at the water meter too .

We had a big water leak In June last year and have been waiting for our claim to come back from Rojales Ayuntamiento since last October. I guess we can’t chase it up until we are able to come back to Spain.

They are very helpful so dont be afraid.
”we have had lots of leaks since”, not surprising when you look at Spanish water pipes and how near the surface they are, the sun does the rest!

As the original poster I'd like to thank all those who've replied. There's a wide range of outcomes amongst you but I've now got more avenues to explore than I'd realised.
Thank you/

We had a very high water bill due to leaking pipe in our small underbuild.
We claimed through our insurance company mapfre. They sent out someone to investigate and then repair and provided us with invoices to show the repairs had been made. We could then take them to Hidraqua who reduced the bill considerably. We went into the hidraqua officeand the lady dealt with it all there and then and we later got a much reduced bill.
Very happy with both insurance company and hidraqua.
Our lesson learned was to always turn off water supply before we leave.

I recollect that you could register with Hidraqua, provide contact details, and they would monitor usage and let you know if it seemed excessive... Sorry, closing the gate after the horse has bolted, but worth investigating.
