Very large water bill due to leak

Very large water bill due to leak

Postby happymonday » Sun Sep 27, 2020 3:26 pm

This week I received a water bill in excess of €4,000. At present I'm in the UK, not have visited my house in Benimar since March. I immediately phoned my neighbour to get them to check the meter. The meter was spinning round at a rate of knots and so the bill appears to be correct. The neighbour turned off the water. I contacted Hidraqua and spoke to an English speaking agent. Unfortunately I didn't understand all that he was saying. However, what I did get was that I should have a plumber check for leaks. I haven't done this yet as my neighbour told me that the ballcock on the swimming pool self fill system was broken.
Has anybody on here received high water bills due to a leak, and how did Hidraqua deal with payment of these bills, the original payment request having been returned by the bank?

My parents had a water leak and a high bill, they had to pay it, got no help whatsoever, mind you, luckily it was caught relatively early and their bill was around 1500, we only found out because a neighbour 3 doors along (All detached villas) had a swimming pool in his underbuild which shouldn''t have been there. The insurance company couldn't help either. They've now had all the waterpipe moved above ground. In the summer we have constant hot water coming out of the cold tap ha ha

The water company has given refunds in the past when water bills are that high. You need to get a plumber to check where the leak is. I'm afraid from the water meter to your property is your responsibility.
There are also some insurance companies which have a water leak covered as well so maybe you could check with them as well.

Hope it all goes well and you get some of the money back. Plus, in future, if you register online with Hidraqua, they will monitor the amount of water being used and will inform you by SMS if the amount you use suddenly rises which could point to a leak. At least it enables you to catch it early.

Yes we had a leak it was only when a wet patch appeared from under the hedge, could not be put down to irrigation system and water bill was 1000 euros. We got the water company to check, because it was registering on the meter it was our responsibility if it had not registered on the meter it would have been outside our boundary and their responsibility. We tried an insurance claim for cost of repair and part if the bill, to be honest a complete waste of time. We gritted our teeth and paid the bills but this taught us a lesson, especially where insurance companies are concerned.

We had a very large water bill 2 years ago, the man discovered it when he was reading the meter, we called a plumber who fixed the leak, and he took photos of all the work at different stages. We took the photos to the Water Office in Rojales and the girl there photo copied everything , gave us a form to take to our town hall, which was filled in by the relevant person, two days later collected the form from town hall ( Benijofar) took back to water office and just waited. We paid the high bill. We got a refund of 2\3 rds of the money back from the Water company.

Please please turn off you water if you are in the UK.We had a water leak €9000 we paid €6000 & the water board paided the rest.We check our water metre regularly now.But if we were in the UK we would turn the water off.We have had lots of leaks since but not as high as the first one.We phoned & went to the water board but it takes time.We saw Derek Monks & he said this happens alot.So i would say check where the leak is take photos & phone the water board. They are very helpful so dont be afraid.

We had the same. We paid the water bill as they would have cut us off. However our insurance company paid back the cost of the water bill apart from a normal monthly payment.

I had a €700 bill due to a pool "leak".

Leak Tech were called, and "discovered" an underground leak under the bottom drain. €250 call-out, and a quote for €850 to fix it.

I then called Lee from Poolology, who confirmed no underground leak, but found that the seal around the pool light cable had worked its way loose. €50 to sort it.

Leak Tech insisted they were correct, and were quite rude when insisting on their call out fee being paid.

That was 18 months ago. No problems since, and bills of around €40 to €60 per quarter ever since.

The insurance company paid the €700 water bill.

I know it's not allowed to negatively comment on companies (particularly those who the majority seem to love)...but Leak Tech should be avoided.
