WHY?
WHY?
by Benjy » Sat Oct 16, 2021 5:56 pm
Why are they allowing people in uk to travel? More importantly, why is Spain letting them in? Even before this, the U.K. has been averaging over 35,000 new cases daily for more than a month. Spain has struggled and is now down to under 2000 a day, looks like another lockdown Christmas.

Risk Averse, due to vaccinations I guess, with only lateral flow on day 2, and to return no PCR to leave Spain, that'll be the reason people will be returning next week for half term ,

The figures in the UK are so high because they go over the top with testing, if Spain or any other European country carried out the same amount the figures would be high too.

Exactly, didn’t Benjy ask the same question a couple of weeks back, the answers the same the more you test the more cases you find. My daughter is testing her two kids daily for free,if I’m not mistaken don’t you have to pay for them in Spain? If it’s free people will do it,if you pay they probably won’t.

. Ok, so the U.K. is being more thorough, it still means there are about 300,000 new cases per week or over a million a month with little or no restrictions.JoJa wrote:The figures in the UK are so high because they go over the top with testing, if Spain or any other European country carried out the same amount the figures would be high too.

I don't normally reply on these things when they are put in the bit about Quesada (when it's really not about Quesada) but I'm not sure that's entirely true.
UK is fixated on the amount of testing, the number of positives and so on. Spain prefers to talk about cases per 100,000 which is a far better way of reporting it, IMHO.
For example, if UK does a million tests a day and gets 500 positives then that's 50 per 100,000. If Spain does 100,000 a day and gets 50 positives then that's also 50 per 100,000.
If another country does 500,000 tests a day and gets 250 positive then that's also 50 per 100,000.
100,000 is the same in every country.
That Spain is below 50 per 100,000 (Valencia down to 38.1 per 100,000) and UK running at over 600 per 100,000 that puts it into perspective.
Local Spanish press blaming those from UK with headlines like" Benidorm reporting 3 times as many cases per 100,000 as the Spanish average and 5 times the Valencian average now that the UK visitors have come back" probably sums it up.
We are doing well here but still keep the facemasks, the social distancing and so on. To really sum up the UK try reading the comments on the Daily Mail articles when they mention covid. Totally made up and ill informed comments that repeat false information as if they were true. No wonder UK is still being hit quite so hard.
I was back there just a couple of weeks ago as my daughter and grandson were tested positive. Thankfully they are both recovering but there was no social distancing, no facemask wearing even in completely crowded places and even public transport had people sitting next to each other with no masks on. It now seems to be a bit of a joke in UK compared to here I'm afraid. A couple on the plane back kicked off when they were told to wear masks but, thankfully, didn't come to much when they got daggers from the rest of the plane.
Oh, and we were just back for a week, paid for the PCR on day 2 in UK and never had the results back by the time we returned. To my mind, just a con to get you to pay for the barcode.
(mind you, I smuggled a Melton Mowbray pork pie on the way back and stocked up with paracetamol, Bonjela, Sudocrem, Dettol and Deep Heat).

. Correct, I did ask this question recently and since then the figures have got a lot worse. Also, deaths are increasing weekly and no one is doing anything about it with little in the line of restrictions. I was never a great believer of outdoor mask but indoors it certainly seems to be helping in Spain.suzi wong wrote:JoJa wrote:The figures in the UK are so high because they go over the top with testing, if Spain or any other European country carried out the same amount the figures would be high too.

. Glad to hear your family members are recovering marcliff. And the point you make about no restrictions almost echoes my opinion except that I didn’t realise they were SO relaxed about the situation in the U.K.marcliff wrote:JoJa wrote:The figures in the UK are so high because they go over the top with testing, if Spain or any other European country carried out the same amount the figures would be high too.

I've not checked but isn't the UK more densely populated than Spain, hence lots more people in much less space?
And with Spain being so low in cases per 100,000 (which is a really great thing), the influx of seemingly virus-ridden, plagued Brits can't be doing much harm.
And Spain "letting them in" is down to the Spanish authorities.
Marcliff - you're correct. There are lots of people now flaunting the rules. If it were left to me, I'd go for the draconian approach...if you don't wear your mask on public transport and can't prove you're exempt, you'll receive a £10000 on-the-spot fine. But many in the UK are now above the law, feral, and just don't care - because there are no consequences for their actions.
I ensure I comply with the rules, whether in Spain or in the UK...I take the approach that in doing what I can to keep myself safe and healthy, I might protect others as a by-product.

Judging by reports on UK tv that seems to have been the case for some considerable time. So many times we've seen people strolling through the streets with few masks in sight and scant respect for distancing.
Personally I'm not going near the place until the disease is genuinely under control and I dont expect that to be any time soon.
