Alfie's Dock - La Mata

Postby Sandra » Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:50 pm

My friend won a meal, via a quiz on the radio, and we ended up here yesterday. Recommended from the point of view of free, but there were a few pluses and minuses!!

The lunch menu del dia was €12.50 excluding drinks (there was also an a la carte menu) - however there was entertainment - a four piece jazz band which played for around 4 hours.

The setting is quite nice, with the beach immediately outside.

The waiters and waitresses were very friendly and helpful - although they were rushed off their feet as the place was packed by both English and Spanish.

If I had to pay the price for the meal alone I think that I would have been a bit disappointed, but I suppose that with the entertainment thrown in it didn't work out too badly. I am not too sure, either, about the med. diet being the most healthy - as veg seem to be a bit scarce at many restaurants!!

I don't smoke, and I had thought that all smokers had to go outside to smoke! However, it seems that there is a way around this! There is an inside part to the restaurant (no ashtrays), but the outside is enclosed by a conservatory like building - with a few opening doors and windows. There were ashtrays in this part - and some cigar and cigarette smokers!! Noise wise it was sometimes difficult to hear the band because of loud groups of people (this time not the English!!)

I am waiting to hear where I am going to go following my offer of a free meal through one of the forums! Will give a report on that later!! I still think that Portico Mar takes some beating!

Thanks for the review Sandra. It's good to know of a beach-side reasonably priced Spanish restaurant (I assume it was Spanish as you mentioned the lack of Vegetables).

I suppose the Mediterranean diet is ostensibly healthy due to the olive oil and their varied ensaladas and vegetables such as Garlic, onions & Tomatoes. They do nice healthy stews with vegetables but I think some of us Brits find the food lacking in green veg. Although I shouldn't think the Spanish miss not having Brussell Sprouts  . They tend to use cauliflower, carrots etc in their pickled tapas, which is nice but apparently not very good for us, if eaten regularly.

Alfie's Dock must be popular if it was that busy which must be a good sign in these austere times.

It looks really hot out there in Quesada - Here in London, it's raining continuously, feels really cold & has been very windy (a large 3 metre high, strong woody shrub blew down in our garden last night) and we have the central heating on :( .

Make the most of it - Lucky you !!

The main course veg consisted of one slice of tomato and diced, roasted potatoes!!

I've got the air-con at the moment - everyone says that it is very hot for June - and despite taking quite a few precautions I managed to end up with minor sunburn! Even had a large brimmed hat - courtesy of e-bay!!

I can't believe that I asked one of my friends to come in and water the garden (England) regularly!!

Tomorrow it is lunch at Mulberry's and Wednesday a place at El Raso - so will make some more comments!!
