Recommended traditional Spanish bars & restaurants

Recommended traditional Spanish bars & restaurants in or near Quesada.

Some (abridged) recommendations by Talkquesada group members. For the full reviews see the topic " Bars and restaurants used by Spanish people" in the 'Quesada general discussion' forum.

Recommended by Glyn Perry – I know its a little out of Quesada but Bibiana's in San-Filgencio is worth a mention. The menu is 5 courses and there's a choice of 2 or 3 items for each course. Good food, good service and fantastic value.

Recommended by Joolz – The bar / cafe at the La Laguna hotel. All hotel staff are Spanish & they have many Spanish guests. They do wonderful Tapas & Cocktails! In the summer they have dancers in the garden & BBQ's. Lovely atmosphere...and lovely wine!

Recommended by Ozzymandius - "The Little Don Carlos" do good Tapas, as does its big brother "The Don Carlos" in Quesada . "Goya", across from the Municipal centre in town do good Tapas, and their evening grub's not too bad either.
Near the CONSUM, "El Faro" do some of the best tapas locally, all cooked in-house by Esther. Gino, the day-time barman also makes everyone very welcome. He is the only one who really speaks English, although owner Manola, and wife Rosa are friendly.
"Charlots" in Benejuzar is worth a lunchtime visit. They have a good menu del dia for €12, starting with prawns and salad, then a choice of about 6-8 first plates (paella good, but not available till 2pm, and the meatball on the starter menu is the size of a cricket ball, comes accompanied by a chicken leg, a boiled potato and a chick-pea broth). Mains aren't huge, but tasty, and a good selection of puds. They don't open on Wednesday, or any evening.
"Venta Ursula" is on the way to Elche, on the roundabout that leads to Santa Pola.Only open lunchtimes, and gives a good menu for, I think, €10. More expensive Saturday lunchtime. They also have a tapas bars, a butchers counter and they sell bread
Further along that road, on the left is Brasseria Granada. Cheap menu €9-€10, with good home cooked food. Their soup is always wholesome, as is whatever version of pork they are serving that day. Neither Ursula nor Granada go to the expense of printed menus, so you need a touch of Spanish to be sure you get what you want, even though the staff in both are friendly and helpful. Along with the lack of menu, is a lack of formal bill at the end. Both places simply write what you owe them on the paper tablecloth (sorry, none of these places do fine dining with niceties like linen)
In Los Montesinos, Pueblo Brava 2, and Restaurant Pili both do good food. On the square near the church is a good tapas bar (sorry, can't remember the name, but it might be "Charleys") Drink and a tapa was €1.20 a couple of weeks back.
Many little out of the way bars in Rojales and Gurdamar (you can tell them cos they all look a bit thread-bare) do nice tapas, as does "Sonia's Bar" in Benijofar. She keeps a nice drop of beer too!!
There is also a "Pension" in the main street of Guardamar (painted blue and white ) which serves very nice lovely Spanish food. It's a real locals place; noisy, friendly disorganised, very cheap and food great.

Recommended by Dot - Very good in Los Montesinos is a bar on the way out towards where el rancho is I think its name is spanish for parrot? and Manolos on lemontree road is very traditional.

Any more typical Spanish recommendations out there? - Please add to this topic.

We've just come back from Nan kin in Las Naciones Quesada. The food was excellant. My wife had a sizzlind duck and vegitables and I had beef and vegitables both with fried rice. My wife had a salad starter and I had a spring roll. We both had chocolate ice cream for dessert. We had a bottle of whte wine and a large beer. Apple snaps and peach snaps.
The came to 18.10 euro. Excellant.

Hi Glyn,

I just copied your recommendation for Nan King as a separate Topic in the 'Recommended restaurants / cafes / bars' forum, so it can be seen and doesn't get lost. Thanks for the recommendation - We haven't tried it yet but will now!

I'm going to take a printed copy of all these recommendations next time we go to Quesada, we won't be short of anywhere to eat then.

Jan.

There's not enough day's to eat in a good one everynight even if you're here for 6 months. It is nice to eat in too, especially barbies!
Have a good one

The "Asian" chinese restaurant at Doña Pepa is good for a bit of rice consumption. They do a full al a carte, but also a "eat as much as you like for €8.75. For the "e-a-m-a-y-l", you can have anything on the al a cartemenu excluding their specialities, so duck and prawns are available. They do a very cheap menu at lunchtime which is excellent value for money.Unlike the "WOK" near Consum, the food is cooked and served to your table, so you don't have to cue up and experience a chef singe his eyebrows :oops

Last night went to "Jaen's" in Guardamar. (This place is on the main road through, on the right if you are coming from Lemon Tree Road end. It has a big blue sign saying "Pensions" on the wall). Parking nearby can be awkward.
Huge menu del dia served all day (although its not necessarily all available at all times) written in English, French, German, and strangely, Spanish. Alioli & pan to start, very generous first and second courses, followed by postres or coffee, accompanied by 1/2 litre of wine each and water €8.50 per head. Try the "Meat Soup" for a starter if you have a good appetite. On top of all that, the chef/owner comes round and presents you with the odd bit of food for you to try "gratis". Excellent value and atmosphere. Gets VERY busy with almost totally, very noisy Spanish after about 9:00 p.m.

Just had a nice lunch of a few Cana's & Tapas in the sunshine in Los Montesinos square at Charley's. The deal is still on €1.80 for small beer and a choice of tapa. Great deal - Thanks for the recommendation Ozzymandius.

We like La Mata and have been in a couple of the beach front cafe-bars but haven't tried any actual Tapas bars. Can you recommend any in particular Glyn?
