Howells & Sons Removals Review

Postby sjv » Mon Dec 09, 2019 6:06 am

Unfortunately I don't recommend anyone to use this company. I will keep it as brief as I can and I am doing this to warn people of our experience. My elderly parents had sold their house and were moving back to the uk. Ann came and gave a quote in April, she said there was 10 cubic meters and would be 1000euros. On the day myself and husband were there with my parents to oversee as it's been a very stressful time for them as they aren't very well. Four guys turned up in a small luton van. I thought to myself it wasn't very big and hoped it would all go in. We explained there was a ¾ fridge freezer, a large coffee table and a tall slim bathroom cabinet that hadn't been quoted for. We knew there would be extra to pay. The van was over half full when the guy in charge with the goatee beard came in and said there is a lot more than what we thought and we are up to 18 cubic meters already, what do you want to do? It all had to go in so we said carry on and fill the van. It had to go back. When loaded he came in and said it was 25 cubic meters and the price was 2650 euros! What a shock for us all. When you are moving you try to budget as much as you can, especially as my parents along with many others bought in the height and sold in the low. We had to give a cash deposit and the guy rang Ann in the office. The more I thought about it, it was impossible. It was 150% more than Ann had quoted. When I started looking at how much a 3.5 ton luton van can hold it is between 15 and 16 cubic meters! My dad rang Ann the next morning to say I think they have made a mistake as the van doesn't hold that capacity. Her response was I don't know what van they took that morning. She called them and then confirmed to us that it was the small one. I find that hard to comprehend as Ann coordinates all drop off and pick ups and they even had a pick up before they reached my parents. I am actually wondering if the van was empty when it arrived! There was no explanation and no apology. They then altered the amount to 1650 euros. That's 1000 euros difference! I would like to say it was a mistake but unfortunately i have read on this forum a similar situation. Quoted 950 euros and was charged 2200 euros, that person said they had all his belongings on the van what could he do. If i hadn't of been there the same would have happened to my parents. We have sent 2 emails to Ann to let her respond and they have been ignored. I am doing this as it seems the vulnerable are being ripped off and I can't let this go on.
If anyone else has had the same let us hear of your experience.

Doing rough calcs on size of a small Luton van, I would think minimum cubic capacity would be around 24 cube but could be 36 + cube, lesson here is never get an estimate, always get a written quote, they then cannot go back and ask for more money if you have a quotation in writing, the onus is on them, not you if they have under estimated.!
If you have a quote from them , then you may have some recourse, not sure of laws in Spain.

I have copied this from a website
Luton Van

Also referred to as a 3.5 Tonne Luton Van, this vehicle is another popular one. Despite the fact their loading capacity is not that much larger than the LWB van (approximately 15-16 cubic metres), Luton vans are often preferable because they often have a tail lift, they’re narrow so easy manoeuvrable around narrow streets (which is especially useful when moving house in London), and because the wheel arches don’t poke into the storage area which makes packing boxes much easier.

A Luton van can take a two bedroom flat or a small house with up to 45 boxes, a table and set of chairs (as long as they’re stackable), big sofas, two double beds, wardrobes and white goods.

They never gave a written quote, something my parents didn't even think about. You really don't expect someone to try to rip you off by 1000 euros. It worries me how many times they have got away with this.

Hi that sounds bad but I can only say our experience was totally the opposite when we used them to move over here ,we got three months storage then we realised that we needed longer no problem at all they even dropped some very important paperwork to us because we didn't have a car, when we moved they only charged us for two extra months storage instead of three as it was only a part month

Glad yours worked out ok. The final price of 1650 euros although was a lot more than was quoted wasn't too bad as my parents ended up having 12 weeks storage. That was hassle as Ann had put the date on the paperwork a month before they actually picked it up so the storage firm wanted to charge my parents another month! My biggest concern is they tried to charge for 25 cubic meters when the van they used didn't hold any more than 15-16 cubic meters. This isn't the first time this has happened. How many times have they got away with this. I am willing to take this further if I hear of any more.

We used them to move from the uk to Spain in 2013, that was no problem but when we had a couple of boxes missing we telephoned the office. The woman on the phone was listening to me but in the background a male person was ranting and raving that it was our fault because we didn't mark the boxes correctly. This was nonsense as when they turned up to collect our furniture they forgot to bring the labels. A few days later they turned up with our missing boxes but no apology. I have told two other couples who were moving back to the UK this story and they both went elsewhere?
