No hot water supply from gas boiler
by Maxiep » Fri May 10, 2019 11:05 pm
Could do with some advice please and recommendations for a plumber in Quesada area. Just arrived at our holiday home and discovered a problem we have never had before in over 20 years. Water supply is on and plenty of water coming from the cold tap but nothing coming out of the hot taps. They are mixer taps. Gas bottle is turned on but nothing happening when we turn on the hot tap connected to the boiler. Looks like cold showers in the morning! Any advice would be welcome and anybody know a good plumber who will come out on a Saturday?
Thank you.
Thank you.

I know it sounds daft but sillier things have and do happen (yes even after 20 years), are all necessary gas taps open !!!!!!!
Is the gas used for anything else, kitchen hob for instance. In other words, is gas in fact flowing from the bottle/regulator ?
If yes to both above:
Is the boiler pilot light igniting ?
If not can you hear the igniter sparking ?
If yes then probably means gas not getting through.
If no then try lighting pilot with match.
If pilot lights but boiler still won't fire up then you have a boiler or water flow problem so time to call a gas certified plumber.

Thanks for replies but the fault seems to be with the hot water tap connected under the boiler which is only for heating water. The gas is connected on a newish boiler but no water output. Cant find a plumber who will work on a gas boiler. Any recommendations please?

You probably have a Ricio boiler which is the worse design in the world.... The slightest bit of calcium on the water detection sensor renders the unit useless..... If you can find it just unscrew it and clean it. It will look clean but it only need an atom or 2 to stop it working... Wonderful isn't it. Otherwise fine the connector and put a piece of insulated wire across the contacts / does the job forever...

Ok, soz but I don’t know any plumbers. But I would like to offer info in case it helps. From what you have said, there is no water at all from the hot tap, even furred up pipes let a bit of water through and it would dribble, so i doubt it can be that. Gas on or off has nothing to do with the flow of water, the water should run regardless of that. You say the the cold water tap flows as it should. So u have water connected.
Based on the info you give the only logical answer is, there must be another tap for the hot water, somewhere in your building, that is not switched on. To me, it seems too simple. Have a look around for any other taps, maybe on the wall below the boiler area, or where any other hot water cylinder might have been in the past. If this doesn’t help then fair enough, I’m just trying to save you time and money.

Some strange advice so far, considering the symptoms you’ve described.
I’d say that the fault lies with the wall mounted stopcock that feeds cold water to the gas boiler. I’ve had this happen to me before, you turn off the water then when you try to turn it on again the stopcock tap turns, but no water.
The problem is that the shaft of the stopcock has become detached from the rest of the mechanism. The fix is fairly simple - turn off the water at the meter, unscrew the body of the stopcock from the part that’s screwed to the wall and screw-in a replacement.
If you try to do it yourself then you should take the body of the stopcock to a decent plumbers merchants and get them to check the thread and give you the correct replacement.
Can’t recommend a plumber in the area I’m afraid, but at least now you you can describe the problem when you in more detail when you do find one.
Pete.

Thank you Pete. That is exactly the problem and we have been to a Ferratia and got spare parts and will have a go at it ourselves. We have spent all weekend looking for a plumber willing to work on a gas boiler but no luck. Can’t believe there is no one out there in the Quesada area. Meanwhile more cold showers!
