Smelly shower drain & 'Salfumant'
by alicenotinwonderland » Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:14 am
Hola,
There is an unpleasant odour coming from our shower drain but we can't establish the cause of it. It is being used regularly and doesn't appear to be blocked and wondered what is recommended to de-odorise it? Bleach products don't seem to do anything and don't want to damage anything I can't see.
We also have a bottle of Salfumant under the sink that neither of us remembers buying so not sure what to use it for (label doesn't state). Can it be used down the shower drain (undiluted?) and how much is advised?
Gracias!

Go to Cadena 88 (the DIY shop by Consum) and at the back of the shop they have plastic bottles of HG drain deodoriser. It has pictures of flowers all over and works excellently for getting rid of drain smells.
Just a capful in a litre of water will do the loo, sink and shower.
Don't use the strong water or things down drains as it contains 28% hydrochloric acid and eats through stainless steel etc. Ideal on porcelain but be careful of getting it on metal.

Check that the drain hasn't developed a leak.
Ours leaked just below the screw hole for attaching the metal fitting, the plastic had perished and it was difficult to see. The water was leaking onto the cement below it it everytime we had a shower which created a smell as it dried.

Baking soda/vinegar combo is a great cleaner.
Pour cup full of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup full of vinegar. Measures are approximate and you can add some lemon juice if you wish.
It will start to fizz and you need to cover the plug hole/drain to contain the fizz
Leave it to work and then flush with hot water.

We get the odd whiff from the drains in our downstairs loo if they've been working on the sewers or drains outside. Doesn't happen often but that HG stuff is excellent and gives a very pleasant smell for a while and the smell doesn't come back unless they are working outside again.

I shall be buying some of that as weve suddenly developed that Spanish stink in one of our bathrooms, I cover the hole up with a thick shower mat and it seems to stop it but will def get that product. Thank you

They had one in mercadona today, it's a blue liquid I smelt it but no nice flowery smell has anybody used that one. 3.80 for a bottle. Like the sound of the other one, just got to get there now.
