Simply - and this is as simple as it will get - you have to prove that you won't be a financial burden on Spain, but this varies depending on your status in Spain, e.g. student, worker, early retiree, pensioner, etc.

There's a really helpful post on Costa Blanca forum, from the incredible Jim Taylor. His guide is long because he wrote it for people who want to do their own application for Residency, but to answer your question, go to section 2) Proof of finances:

Agree with post because hubby pensioner and we are mortgage free we had to prove that we got at least €700.00 per month.Got ours back end of November in Orihuela
