Residency costs

Residency costs

Postby valenciasman » Tue Mar 15, 2016 1:02 pm

We are planning to move here permanently and want to become resident. Just had a quote for 160 euros each for a lawyer to carry out the work. Anyone know if this is reasonable or is there somewhere better?
How easy is it do do it myself? I have heard the people at the town hall will try and make it difficult.

thanks

Hmmm....

I think 160€ is a bit much... try a translator unless your Spanish is good.

The people at the town hall will quite possibly be difficult as it is not them that do the residency... you have to go to the Police station in Elche...or maybe Oriheula

and most Spanish will not make things "difficult" they are just doing a job.... it is usually the red tape that is a bit long winded, but that is the Government, not the chappie on the desk..

You can do it yourself at a national police station. You show you're at Villamartin so you can go to the foreigners office at the Orihuela Costa town hall to do it. They have a list of what you require (paperwork and so on) and the EX18 application form. It's only open from 9 to 11 each morning to make the appointment and it will take a couple of trips. They will give you an appointment (after the 9 to 11 times) and you take all the necessary paperwork with you as laid out on the information sheet they give you including proof of payment (they also give you a list of the banks you can pay at). The National Police part moved out some time ago but they left a clerk who has access to the databases and will complete the registration for you. They cannot actually issue the card so you have to wait a week or so for it to be sent by the main police station.
Much easier to do it there than go to either Orihuela or Elche but you might be advised to take a Spanish speaker with you.
Orihuela Costa town hall is in Playa Flamenca. You can park at the Mercadona supermarket there and walk down (not far) and I think they still have the take a ticket and wait system rather than booking online as you have to do at Elche. The foreigners office is at the far end on the left as you enter the town hall.

You can do most things yourself. Just do your homework thoroughly. It's all the paperwork they need that takes a bit of getting used to.

Paperwork I can deal with, I hope. Its when they speak spanish I will be in a mess. Just our of interest, when EU residents apply for British residency do they have to speak English

I may be wrong but I didn't think a Lawyer was allowed to do it for you. That was changed years ago. They may supply a Translator if you need one then it costs double the price. The Lawyers fee and the Translator.
Look at Help Veja Bajas website and see what you need to take. It isn't an indepth interview. It's all about the correct paperwork. The actual price for the Residencia is very little. Just a few Euros.

Any National police station or foreigners' office. We did ours in Elche but it was quite a long slog (not getting there, just the system). You have to book and appointment online, get the paperwork, pay for it (I think Elche takes the money there now but we had to go to a bank) then go through the interview in Spanish. Fortunately, then, we didn't need to prove income or bank accounts.
I took some neighbours to Orihuela Costa town hall and, despite having to go 3 times, was much easier.
