What is the difference between Residencia and Extranjeros?

What is the difference between Residencia and Extranjeros?

Postby Paulr » Mon Aug 14, 2017 11:25 pm

Hi,
Some months ago, I saw a post of here which suggested that Residencia and Extranjeros are two different things, but I can't find it. I want to make an application for Residencia, but I'd like to know whether they are different to ensure I apply for the correct thing. Clarification would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

Residencia means residency and extranjeros means foreigner.
So if you want to become a resident you will be applying for residencia but may need a extranjeros certificate.

residencia only applies to non eu nationals

eu citizens apply to be included on the foreigners register as living in spain

Yes, but it is far easier to say "residencia" than "on the register of EU foreign nationals residing in Spain".
Even the bank manager calls it residencia and the solicitor said "this is your residency card" when she handed it to me, shorthand works.
The official EX18 application form is called the "Solicitud de Inscripcion en El Registro Central de Extranjeros - Residencia Ciudadano de la EU".
Wee bit of a mouthful to come out with that rather than "applying for residencia" don't you think?

That's great Jim, thanks. I've been confused about this ever since I moved here. I even had an appointment arranged to join the Extranjeros list, but cancelled it, as I thought it wasn't the correct thing.

So, as I live here permanently and, therefore, understand that I should be making my declaration of worldwide assets here, rather than in the UK, and also submitting my tax returns here, rather than in the UK, applying to join the Extranjeros list is sufficient?

(I'm now using a Gestor to make the application on my behalf, to ensure I make the correct application, and even he calls it Residencia! I'm now thinking that I should have proceeded with my original Extranjeros application and saved myself Eu 60!)

I believe you have to be registered for tax with the Spanish Government and do your tax returns every year than you are a resident of Spain. Need both documents.
