Audacious Thief About!
Audacious Thief About!

Unfortunately another theft from our community!
A man dozed off on his own porch. To get to the porch you have to open the garden gate and go up 8 or so steps. A thief (who no-one saw) walked in the open door and stole wallet; passports; phone etc. It must have been terrible when the man woke up and realised what had happened - but the aggravation of having to cancel the cards and sort out a new passport can be equally daunting. I'm afraid that these days you have to treat your house like Fort Knox!
Even when I am outside on the porch the back door is locked, and any valuables are in a safe - the same goes for when I go in the pool - doors locked, shutters down etc In view of recent thefts in the Dona Pepa area my community has set up a security system (only known within the community) to try and keep visitors and residents safe.

I think that the residents are very savvy - but the visitors come over with the laid back holiday spirit! I think that is why our community has now set up a new system.

Sorry to hear this Sandra. It seems that sadly we have to always be prepared for the opportunist thief.
It's wise to get into good habits of always locking gates and grills, wherever we are in the house or garden and leaving instructions to friends or holidaymakers, who may stay in our homes, to do the same. Also, as you say, leaving valuables and keys in 'safe' places as much as possible.
It must be too easy sometimes for these thieves - The times we have walked by open gates and open doors and open grills (We wouldn't leave our front doors open in the UK, would we?!). It may be that someone is downstairs inside the house but it only takes a reason to go upstairs or (if there is a back door) out the back, for a thief to take the opportunity...and beware of builders around - even more reason to be careful...they may have an empty water bottle in their hand to ask for a refill or something like that, if confronted (this has happened near us!!)...Definitely audacious and up to all tricks!
Thank you for the warning Sandra.
Jan.

I really advocate safes for houses! We bought our ones for less than €50 each - and they have saved us a lot of worry! Being bolted to the floor and walls they would take a lot of shifting - and make too much noise if someone attempted to do so!!

Hi Dave
I am very interested in this - but it is a case of bad timing - I am not arriving back in Spain until after your meeting!!
Keep up the good work - and I will have a look at your website!
PS I know that it was just a typo - meeting date should read Monday, 2nd September!

I've just been told about another theft! It happened to one of my neighbours a short time ago. This was somewhat different. The man is Belgian, and wears a lot of jewellery. It is difficult to ascertain how, but got into conversation with someone and in the course of this conversation he took off the gold chain to show this comparative stranger. The stranger took it and looked at it - and then put it back around the Belgian's neck. However, a short time later the Belgian found out that the his actual chain had been "palmed" - and what he now had was a cheap substitute!!

This one is easy - Warning! Don't take off your jewellery and hand it to a total stranger...Simples!
Sorry couldn't resist that one.
PS. Hi Sandra, Are you sure this happened because I have heard this same sort of thing a few times, just a few details change..like once it happened to someone when a car stopped to ask the way and they did the same with a necklace. I may be wrong but I think it could be an urban myth...or it may have happened once and the story has changed over time, like a Chinese whisper.
