Be careful in the sea and take notice of the warning flags!
Be careful in the sea and take notice of the warning flags!
by Jan » Tue Jul 05, 2016 3:31 pm
There was a Red flag flying on the beach at La Mata today and it was 'almost' unbelievable just how many people (including children with parents!) were ignoring the flag and going quite far out into the sea. The sea was rough and there were no lifeguards because apparently there is a new contract for the lifeguards that doesn't start until the end of July.
At least one person had to be 'saved' while we watched - Two men swam out and brought the lady back to the shore. It was so lucky that someone saw her getting into difficulty and started shouting, as she appeared to be on her own on the beach.
These type of incidents put, not only the swimmer but other people at risk and only in the last week or so the local papers have had reports of at least two drownings in the area when the victims ignored warnings.
I expect most of us know the flags but as a reminder:
Red Flag - Indicates no swimming (bathing is prohibited - very dangerous)
Yellow Flag - Indicates swim with caution
Green Flag - Indicates safe sea conditions
Of course we should all respect the sea and take caution at any time as conditions can change quite quickly.
Please take care everyone!

Good advice Jan. There has been at least 2 drownings locally within the last few weeks and one of them was
at La Mata. There are very strong & unseen undercurrents that catch people by surprise. Guardamar beaches are
renowned for them. Be safe people.

Just shows to be very careful whether there are warning flags hoisted or not. There are under-currents in the sea on these beaches that should not be underestimated.
Stay safe!

For swimming & particularly for little ones the beach at Torrevieja Marina is safest being enclosed & shallow with no strong currents. It may not be the prettiest but saves worrying about going n the water.
Also have been going to Playa Lisa in Santa Pola beautiful big beach with calm waters but suppose nowhere is truly safe when the wind blows>>!!

Ca not understand why people go in the sea it is a dumping ground for human waste and full of dangerous chemicals you may
as well jump in a sewer.
