Car Break In

Car Break In

Postby Jon Stead » Tue Jun 10, 2014 3:18 pm

Parked the hire car up outside the house last night about 8 o'clock, got up this morning at 6:30 and found the passenger window smashed and the sat Nav taken from the glove box. Contacted Centauro and took car back to Alicante airport and was given another one with no problem.

On the way to Alicante I called in to Rojales police station to report the incident only to be told that I had to report it to the Civil Police at Quesada Town Hall. Decided to do this after changing the car. Went to Town Hall on way back from Alicante, got there at 10, didn't get out until 1:30. Morning wasted and a sat Nav down.

Contacted the insurance company and they've sent a claim form for the hire company side of things so I hope to get reimbursed for that side of things. Clearly the loss of the sat Nav is not covered, but does. Anybody know if my year long insurance, ceases once I make a claim or will it continue to cover me for the rest of the policy's duration?

Sorry to hear this Jon. Some people say to leave the glove box open and the boot cover off when the car is parked to show that there's nothing worth stealing in there but it's such a shame we have to think of doing this. Our friends had their window smashed just for leaving an empty carrier bag on the back seat that looked like it may have something in it...not nice and as you've found out, very inconvenient!

As for the car hire annual excess insurance, it should be a maximum yearly limit for excess or multiple claims. Ours is £5000. So you should be ok as a window will be well under that limit.

Jan.

Thanks Jan, I haven't got round to reading all the small print yet. We go back to uk on Thursday so I'll sort it all out once there. I at least have the police report now that I will need.

Oh what a shame Jon; sort of puts a dampener on things when stuff like that happens! That said, it can happen anywhere - I had a car stolen 3 times in the UK; always got it back but gave up in the end and got myself something less attractive! Hope it all gets sorted for you quickly and painlessly.

Jan - good idea! Think I'll do that when I'm over in a few weeks. Makes sense once someone makes the suggestion :)
