Looked like a gas man at the gate wanting to check the gas connections l explained l don't need a check as we renewed all gas leads last winter he then asked me for €80 for a 5 year guarantee which l refused to pay as l assumed it was a con trick am l right or wrong

You're right. Only the Repsol or similar company can check the connections and they will never call without an appointment. Lots of bogus gasmen (properly qualified, mind) but just trying it on. Some have had bills to pay for things that didn't need doing, in some cases quite hefty ones like a hundred euros for a rubber hose.
I had one a few months ago and told him we were all electric.

Yes they are conmen the gas company will inform you before they send anyone and the should have id.
