Pickpocket Alert
Pickpocket Alert
by Ferryfan » Thu May 10, 2012 2:15 pm
Please all be aware there is a new wave of pick pockets hitting the area.
I am aware of 2 separate incidents both in Mercadoona supermarkets- both in the last 3 days. one in Rojales and one in Torremendo- whereby people are being asked to help an elderly person handpick some fruit or veg.
Before they realise it an accomplice has had your wallet out or your bag or pocket.
Please everyone lets not stop helping others but just be aware that there could be more to it than meets the eye.

It's always good to have alerts to the latest scams! There seem to be some many of them. It is always difficult to know what to do with money/purses/cards - some of my friends seem to have found ingenious hiding places!
One lady (from my community), a couple of years ago, had her handbag stolen, outside Gama, and it contained a passport as well - so it was a nightmare to get it all sorted out before she went home.

Thanks Ferryfan for this alert. As Sandra says it's always good to know about these things - gets us thinking & more aware.
I suppose it's best not to take too much cash anywhere, maybe only one credit card (if necessary) and no passport. I know they want ID when using a Credit card but, apparently, a certified passport copy can be used. I must admit we keep meaning to get one...anyone know where? Is it the Town Hall or Police Station?
I did see someone once with a chain on their wallet, clipped to their belt loop - could work for a purse clipped to a handbag too I suppose - across the body bag of course.

I'm not sure if this is legal (or totally accepted) Jan, but the Post Room in Dona Pepa miniaturizes passports and driving licences, and I have been told that these should be acceptable in lieu of the real thing. I haven't put it to the test, but I know a lot of people who carry them instead of the real thing. Otherwise, at a guess it would mean a trip to the Ayuntamiento in Rojales.
One of my friends keeps notes in her bra - but I am not sure that this is the ideal place. Another of my friends had a bag slung from one shoulder, across her body to her waist, but she had her purse stolen by someone who cut through the strap. I'm inclined to use one of those bunbags, and leave my hands free.

Thanks Sandra, will look into that.
We know it is not accepted for credit card proof but we do carry laminated miniature copies of our passports which I made myself, especially while driving. We always try to remember the driving license but, apparently, it says that a passport should be shown too if the police do a check but we take a chance with the copy because it's safer than always carrying around a passport. It's not easy for us Brits, who do not have a habit of carrying around a driving license in the UK,to remember to always have these things with us. Many a time we've been driving to the beach (where we always take the minimum of cash etc.) and I have a sudden panic that we haven't remembered a driving license. I would hope the police would be sensible & allow it to be taken to the cop-shop later, if not we have to accept being locked up (I think I'm joking!)
I think the certified copy would be better but still have to remember to take it with us

Just had a thing about the certified copy - how about an abogado/a?? If you have one in Quesada it might be an idea to pop in. The last time that I was in Spain I changed my abogada - to the one near to the Gama in town - so easy to pop in and ask anything that I'm not sure about.
If you did end up "inside" Jan, I'd send you regular food parcels!!
PS. If you were lo
