Anyone obtained their NIE number in UK?

Anyone obtained their NIE number in UK?

Has anyone had experience of obtaining their NIE number in UK without coming over to Spain? Apparently the Embassy in London does not provide an NIE form. Do you know where I can obtain one from without employing an agent?

There's a copy of the NIE application form EX15 here
and a translation in English here

I think this is still the correct form to use if it's just the NIE you need.

We obtained ours in the UK as we live in London and we applied at the Spanish Embassy while we were waiting for our house to be built, 10 years ago.

It was a painless process -We went there with our passports (check what else they need, possibly birth certificates??), filled in the details they needed on the forms, during a mini-interview, and then one of us went back to collect them at a later date when they were ready.

All this may have changed but I doubt it. It probably costs a bit more than 'doing it yourself' in Spain but, at the time, this was convenient for us. We are actually thinking of getting our two adult children an NIE each as, if anything happened to us in the future while we still own the property in Spain, as inheritors, they would need this to take ownership or sell the house and it would save them time and bother.

I have read in one of the freeby papers recently that there is a new legislation that states that NIE certificates recently obtained must now be renewed every 3 months or else a 600 euro fine imposed! Not sure how this would be imposed it sounds daunting enough to have put me off encouraging my son who lives in Thailand to get one when he comes to the Uk.

The correct procedure is now to apply on an EX18 for either residency or non-residency and your NIE at the same time. This should be done within 3 months of coming to Spain. You will then get either the green card as registered on the EU foreign nationals register (known incorrectly as residencia but you know what I mean) or a certificate of non-residency (not to be confused with the one your bank issues for fiscal reasons).
Both these documents list your NIE number. For this reason, the NIE actual certificate (not the number) is only valid for 3 months. If you have the green card there is no need to update it. Ever. It lasts for life. The non-residence certificate needs to be renewed every 2 years.
There is, therefore, no requirement for the NIE certificate any more if you follow the correct procedure.
So ignore the old NIE certificate and get either a green card or a non-res certificate. The old NIE certificate can be binned as it has served its purpose and there is absolutely no reason to update it.
