I believe the newer NIE CERTIFICATE expires in three months, check the date on yours. Ours were organised in 2003 so we don't need to renew ours.

Your NIE number is for life. The certificate is valid normally for three months, although as always in Spain nothing is set in stone.
You do not renew your NIE number, but you may have to renew the the certificate.
Seems to me a little jobs worth may be going on, or a little more dosh!!
When I bought a car they were only interested in my NIE number not the certificate. If they have a residencia your NIE number is on it.
Hope it helps

And here we go again.
Firstly, the NIE number never expires. It is with you for life. Even if you left Spain for years and came back the number would still be valid.
Now, the NIE certificate. A couple of years ago, they made the certificate (not the number) only valid for 3 months. This is because you have 3 months to make up your mind if you are going to be resident or non resident.
If you take up residency, you will get a green card which is valid for life and never needs updating.
The NIE certificate can be thrown away or shredded as it is now worthless. The residency card has your NIE number on it which is all you need.
If you decide you are non-resident, then you apply on the same form for a certificado de no residente. A non-resident certificate. This is valid for 2 years and you can update it for about 10 euro a time. The NIE can be binned or shredded as it is worthless. The non resident certificate has you NIE number on it as well.
On the other hand, if you haven't got either a resident or non resident certificate your NIE certificate (not number if you are still with me) will need to be updated.
So do it properly and get either a resident or non resident certificate.
It is all on the same, original application form and can be done at any National Police station with a foreigners department and saves so much hassle.
It is only the NIE certificate that runs out after 3 months.

Padron is valid for three months and now the NIW Certificate is valid for three months (not the number itself) and yes if you have a NIE certificate which says on the bottom right corner CADUCA A LOS TRES MESES you have the newer style issue and you need to renew it to buy a car (if it has passed the date) if you have old style NIE certificate and you do not have a note saying it will expire in 3 months then you do not need to renew the certificate for car purchase. The pardon, goes without any notes , is only valid for 3 months.

The current NIE certificates I believe are like the origional ones and no longer have an expiary date but you do need the NIE cirtifficate to be in date as Trafico insist on this. just the padron is not enough.
