Hi all,
Would anyone have advice on the procedure for getting NIE numbers.
I have read plenty of info on the internet but the agency we are dealing with seem to be very laid back about this.
We have been told it is okay to get the NIE on the day we sign by paying 100 euros each.
How did you all get on with yours? Did anyone get it through the Spanish embassy in th UK? We are not due to travel back out to Spain until we complete.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Karen

What a shame you're not in Spain yourself to obtain the number. It is now quite an easy process and your NIE and residence or non-residence application are now done with one form at any National Police Station with a foreigners department. The town hall at Playa Flamenca in Torrevieja does them as does Elche, Alicante and Orihuela.
100 euros each for something that costs less than 10 euros seems rather expensive.
It can, however, take a couple of weeks to get the number.
You could do it in UK but it means attending a Spanish Embassy in person and can take up to a month to get the numbers sent to you.

Hi
Agree it does seem expensive but to get to the Spanish Embassy involves travelling from Wales to London. This negates any cost.
Our main concern is that things go smoothly on completion day and does not incur problems as we do not have the NIE numbers.
Thanks

Hello we completed our house purchase in November. We applied for NIE
With our legal rep on the Monnday, she went back to collect them the next day , then
We signed for our house on the Wednesday. However the appointment was made in October by our legal rep, and I am sure we did not pay that much. But we did have to go in person with our legal rep, with photos and documents which she had completed for us.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. We have decided to try and get NIE from here in the UK.
We may be asking some silly questions about filling in the forms.
When it asks for mother and father's names is this just their surnames?
Is it ok to put our UK address only on the form as technically until we complete we do not have an address in Spain?
We have read the advice on spanish property insight website but any advice about completing the form would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Karen
The forms are on the Spanish Consulates web site and next to them they have examples filled out in English - I didn't realise this at first and was copying every bit out into google translate... it was taking me hours!!
But if my memory serves me right then they want the Christian names of your parents (given names).
All the best
Benny

I guess this is horses for courses, we got ours when we purchased in summer 2012 via an agent recommended by the estate agent. Yes it cost us Euro 100 each however this included a morning of their time to meet with us and drive us to Elche, all paperwork handled by them, a 30 minute wait with them at the police station in Elche and we had our NIE documents.
When included in the purchase cost of the property it was well worth it, did not take up any of our time other than the couple of hours spent with the person in Elche while they did all the work, and was a completely hassle free process.
My wife and I are fully fluent in Spanish, in fact it is her mother tongue, so language was not a barrier.
Our property purchase sailed through largely because we followed the advice of the estate agent and did use specialised agents as and where recommended.

We did something similar two years ago but it only cost us 85 euros each (only!). We were picked up and driven to Elche where another agent was waiting for us with the ticket. Walked straight past all the queues sat down and signed. We were in and out in less than 15 minutes and got our NIE's there and then. Was well worth the money as time was precious. Noel

Thanks for your comments. This is a very informative forum.
It is quite scary when you read different advice on various websites.
As it is difficult to get time off to get to London we think we will trust our agent (who is well established and knowledgable in the Quesada area) and having just emailed our solicitor, who has assured us all will be okay.
Roll on June
