That must be some relief to you as it's much easier to send the form (or certificate) to prove Tax residency, than it is to get an NIE.
The banks send a form (Declaration of Tax Residence) out every two years to Non-Residents (at their permanent home address) and we have to just fill it in and send it back in the addressed envelope.

I have just had to re-apply for mine. Apparently a new law came in last year that the NIE number was for life BUT the actual certificate was only for 3 months!!! Not a problem unless you are buying a car (Traffico want one dated recently) or for banks or buying a house!
Hope this makes sense!
