Renewing your NIE?

Renewing your NIE?

Postby millerflynn » Mon Apr 21, 2014 1:42 pm

Hi,

Our bank has blocked our bank account in Spain as both our passports and NIE had run out, now have renewed passports but need to get our NIE's renewed? Does anyone know the quickest way of getting our NIE's done as we both are living in the UK?

Thanks
Steve ;)

Hello Steve,
:text-welcomewave:
Welcome to TalkQuesada.

I may be mistaken but I didn't think NIE's had an expiry date. I thought they were for life.

You can get an NIE from the Spanish Embassy in London, if you are nearby, but it takes a few weeks to come through (We did ours this way).

The quickest way though is getting it in Spain but that's not much help to you if you are not going over there soon.

Thanks Jan,

We need to get this completed quickly as we are now being told that we have not paid our mortgage for 3 months, this is all down to the Banesto bank being taken over by Santander and as usual Brits seem to be at the bottom of the email chain!

I've seen companies online that offer to get your NIE for you in 2 weeks, but I am always wary of these sort of offers? Has anyone ever used these companies?

Cheers

I just checked on-line and NIE's are for life and do not have an expiry date. I hope this helps you as it means you do not have to renew the one you have.

"The NIE number always starts with "X" and is followed by seven numbers and a letter. Your number is personal to you; it is not transferable nor does it expire".

NIE is for life, they stopped your account because of the out of date passport. Close the account and open with the Deutcher Bank, they are brilliant. Mike

Yes, photocopies for Spain and UK plus it's also a good idea to take photos or scans of all important documents including passports and send them to your email account. They can then be accessed from anywhere - especially good for lost passports, where they need all the exact details to get new ones.

Hi The NIE may be for life the Number will not change but BE AWARE some when issued are on a temporary basis and only last for three months!! it will say this on the bottom of the NIE I know because it was on mine! I was told that they should not do this but it is done to generate revenue as you then have get it re done! I encountered this when buying a car and the car sales people pointed this out an said that if Traffico are keen on the day the may not do the transfer! luckily I got away with it at the time.

Hi,

The problem is our passports ran out in Jan this year so we sent over copies of the new ones to the bank, then we were told that our account with the bank is still blocked as our NIE papers are out of date, they were done in 2003 when we bought our house, now the only way to fix this is fly to Spain to get them renewed?

Hi,

Update: As from everyones replies it is not the NIE that is the issue, this is current and for life but must have your correct address on it. The bank have now confirmed that they require a certificate of residence from the HMRC to prove that our tax is being paid in the UK, which was the policy put in place by the UK government in the previous budget.
