If they ask if you want to pay in Euros or Pounds, always say Euros. You get a better exchange rate that way. Also check that your Credit Card Provider doesn’t slap on a charge for you using it abroad. If they do get another Credit Card. The Consumer Expert Martin Lewis has some good information on his Website, “Money Saving Expert”.

They put an oversea charge on all cards. So be careful and check with your UK card supplier.

I always pay in pounds if offered, because although the exchange rate is not quite so good, the additional charge the credit card company puts on for a non-sterling transaction if you pay in euros makes it far mor expensive.

I have a Santander Zero card. No surcharges for using abroad, no surcharges for withdrawing cash. Not sure if I’m allowed to add a link so I won’t but it’s easily found if you look it up. Barclaycard also have a good card for using abroad.

And then you'll be at the mercy the shopkeeper or restauranteur uses for your transaction. They could program the machine for 1 to 1 if they want. Plus banks will put 0% commission but reduce the actual exchange rate so you get lower than the commercial rate.
Always, always recommended to use the local currency so that the bank rate of exchange is used, not the shopkeeper's.
Martin Lewis from Money Experts says it is the golden rule to always pay in the local currency, euro or USD.
