To be honest, you’d be better-off getting the information straight from the horse’s mouth...

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what is insured in Spain. A friend says the car is insured and anyone can drive. Is this correct ?

Yes, in Spain it’s the vehicle that’s insured rather than the driver (at least with a standard policy).
There will be age restrictions, and the person driving must obviously be licensed for that type of vehicle.
The driver should also have written permission from the owner. There are a few sample pro forma permission letters around - if you search you’ll find something suitable. All the other standard documents must be carried as well, regardless of who is driving.
I think also that any speeding fines will go to the registered owner (as in the UK), but I don’t know what the process is for notifying the authorities that someone else was driving at the time.

Hi peteknight,
If you get a speeding fine, which I recently have, there is a portion at the bottom of the notification which you simply fill out with the name & driving licence number of the driver at the time of offence. Interestingly, you do not always get points, for example on a motorway (120kph limit) you do not accrue points if going less than 140 or 150 depending on area. I was clocked at 139 & the fine clearly stated sin puntos, I checked with the policia local who verified this for me.
Regards,
Dave.
