Brass/Copper polishing

Brass/Copper polishing

Postby eaglet » Thu Apr 26, 2018 6:48 pm

Hi, I've just retrieved some of the above in the shape of spoons that I used to hang in my bar in the UK. I've just tried to clean them with the correct cleaner but having not been polished for some time they are badly tarnished! Is there anywhere reasonably local, possibly industrial, that could clean them for me?

Depending on the quantity, you could try cleaning them first before polishing. A mild acid like vinegar or lemon juice works quite well on brass. Alternatively a large tub of elbow grease, and abrasive polish.

Boil some starchy potatoes and put the spoons in the water after you take the potatoes out

Was at sea for many years where we used to use a paste made up with HARPIC (powder toilet cleaner) to clean brass that had been subjected to extended exposure to salt etc. Just make sure to wear rubber gloves as such cleaners can be very corrosive.
