Driving with a cracked windscreen

Driving with a cracked windscreen

Postby Roach » Wed Jun 20, 2018 5:04 pm

Is anyone aware of how bad a windscreen has to be cracked before it is considered illegal to drive with it?

I had a look on the n332 site but can't seem to find anything on this subject.

TIA.

Driving with a cracked screen for any length of time is really not sensible. The crack can spread at anytime. Very dangerous. It doesn't need N332 to tell us that. How long is a piece of string?

Google for the UK MOT windscreen requirements. Spanish requirements are similar.

Damage directly in line of site from behind the wheel is a straight fail and can be dangerous. Blocking your view.
Other parts of the screen are not as important.

If a crack obstructs your view it’s considered an offence. Same as a sticker or fluffy dice blocking the view.

We have had a small crack at the bottom of our windscreen for about 3 years. It has not got any bigger and it has passed the ITV every year so has not been considered dangerous or a problem. Obviously it depends on the size and where it is.
Happy in the sun.

This crack is massive and runs the entire length of the windscreen, although not in line of sight. The insurance company seems to think it's ok to drive, i don't. :?

Hello.

I work in a garage and we changed a lot of windscreen. In all cases the insurance paid for it. Almost all insurance include glasses.

Why does everyone ask "is it legal" or not, get the windscreen replaced immediately, either that or take out a funeral plan.

Because sometimes, as in my case, i could not get in touch with my useless insurance company to arrange a grua so had no other option but to drive as it was to the garage to get it replaced. Hence the question.
