I think the ferry/french drive argument is about 50/50. We brought a camper van over on Brittany Ferries to Bilbao, it was £450 for a cabin for two adults and a cat . Then the fuel and one overnight stop dive, another £300, made it about £750. The point was it cut out half the driving. Its fine driving 1000 miles if you have two or three drivers to rotate, but if you are the sole driver, then I think 8 hours a day driving is easily the limit. Any more is dangerous.
