Half pigeon half parrot?

Half pigeon half parrot?

Postby Toodiq » Wed Feb 06, 2019 6:32 pm

This pretty bird landed on my terrace this afternoon. Looked like a pigeon but was beautifully coloured. Can anyone tell me what it is ? It had tags on both legs and was quite tame.

They are quite valuable, are protected and they should be reported to police if found. I guess your little one has flown away by now.

I'd give it a brush and set it to work painting those balustrades!

Some interesting info on tracking down the owners of lost racing pigeons (and some recipes for pigeon pie) in this thread:

We often saw the Painted Pigeons being flown. Then one day there was a knock at the door. Paloma Pintado says-the man at the Door? We didn't understand but eventually realised what he meant. His Pigeon was at the back in the Community Garden. Years ago when going to the Market in Rojales we saw a garden where they were being kept. It might get home on it's own.

Thanks for your replies, that’s so interesting. He wasn’t here for long and hopefully is now back home. Must be a real skill painting those feathers; although I hope it doesn’t harm them.

Last year mum and dad had a knock on the door there were about 4 car loads of men coming to get their pigeons which were having a rest in one of their palm trees, I did take photos but have since deleted them. They were so pleased they were allowed to come into the garden, borrow the ladder and get their birds back. Mum and dad enjoyed the excitement too

There are pigeon lofts right near my parents house by the big water Tower up on the hill from La Mata to Torrevieja nr to what was St Jaime Hospital. Think they came from there.

theres a bar in Formentura, where the pigeon club meet,, that displays all the owners colours on a wall, different pigeon owners have there own colours,i think its food colouring they use ,not paint as that would clog the feathers, the good racing pigeons are worth a lot of money ,theres a lot of pigeon clubs about if you care to take notice,
