well in this house, the sockets are two foot off the ground but the internal wall junctions boxes are one foot from the ceiling ,so im guessing the cables drop down from the cieling cavity here.

A junction box here seems to be a 10cm round hole in the wall with a 5 inch square of plastic stuck on top as a cover, and the cables are twisted together with a ceramic cap, like we stopped doing in the Uk in the 1970's

The cables thus are in the wall cavity and you'll therefore need a detector that can sniff them 4-6 inches away

Can you actually rely on these though?! I need one too but am tempted to just get one of amazon.es and have it delivered to the locker by the arches. Only issue being its easter weekend...

Most villas etc. out here are built from a single block of what looks like a cross between a brick and a tile with several square holes going through it, no cavity as such (which is why they get so damn cold in winter . . . Having seen the way electrics are installed here on my extension, cables are installed fairly close to the surface and generally take the most direct route between outlet and the joining box, so often diagonally!! . . .a detector is a must really . . .
