Security liquid limits

Seems strange to me you can't bring liquids larger than 100 ml through, but you can bring I think up to 10 100 ml bottles through, all the same liquid,am I missing something?

I think it was brought about due to terrorists could bring dangerous liquids in larger amounts but 100ml isn't large enough for the compounds to be mixed and used

But you cannot mix a litre of explosives in a 100ml bottle, maybe that's why? Don't know exactly.

Are you sure about that? Going through Security in Edinburgh, I was stopped because I had filled 2 of those little plastic bags. I was told, “only one bag per person”.

10 x 100mls of liquid or paste type consistency ( eg make up etc), 100 ml takes less checking than 10 1 L items, size, whatever you can get in “one” of those clear plastic bags, per person, less room needed on board for storage, most people like hand luggage these days anyway to save queuing at the conveyor belt. and let’s face it, there isn’t much we can’t buy at the other end of the flight in what ever country you end up in.

That’s correct:

  • containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
  • contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
  • the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
  • you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
  • you must show the bag at the airport security point

well the good news Maria Elena is that soon you won't have to bother with the wee plastic bags at all but can keep the liquids in your bag - they are trialling new scanners at Edinburgh. News story on this here

Apparently these have been trialled at Heath-row for a while. Unfortunately we are still stuck with the 100ml limit....

Hi, We fly to and from the USA annually and for some time Border Security tell all passengers just to leave all liquids in their bags. So the system must have been around for quite a while elsewhere.
