How to get social security number

Hi all,

I'm looking for a job in the costa blanca area. I have an NIE number but some employers require also a social security number.

How do you apply for a social security number?

Can anyone let me know how to go about getting a social security number please?

You get a number when you join the SS system not before. There is no way to apply for or acquire one to satisfy a prospective employer.

Really?
You can get a social security number issued if you are a EU citizen (ie, still British) with your NIE. You can make an appointment at the INSS (Social Security office) and the nearest one here, I think, is Torrevieja. If you're not an EU citizen you will need the residency card (not the one the EU citizens have which is simply showing you are on the register of foreign EU citizens residing in Spain).

You need a TA1 form which you can download along with several sites that will translate it for you (for info only as the form has to be completed in Spanish).

You do not need a job or be self employed to get one but you do need one if you are to be employed or self employed.
You apply for an Asignacion de numero de Seguridad Social which is simply asking for a number to be allocated.
Once you have a job, your employer (or yourself if you are self employed) requests an Afiliacion a la Seguridad Social which actually puts you on the social security system.

If you Google the INSS Torrevieja you can request an online appointment for the asignacion part and will need your passport and NIE (and residency cert if you have one) plus photocopies of the certificates.

If you don’t know it’s of more help if you say nothing.

Walk in at Torrevieja SS office, take a ticket and wait around 10 minutes to be called. Take completed TA1, passport and NIE and copies.
