Electric cutting out - advice please?
Electric cutting out - advice please?
by Gmaster5 » Sat Jan 11, 2020 11:25 pm
Hi everyone,
I need some advice please on our electric please.
We have a traditional build Spanish apartment and our electric keeps cutting out. Granted we cannot run all electrical items like the UK but it has always been manageable until more recently.
Now it trips with no warning and often with just a few low surge items on. Overnight low energy radiators are used it trips 2/3/4 times then other times it is fine. There’s no rhyme or reason to it.
Any knowledgable people out there with some advice it would be greatly appreciated. it’s becoming a total pain!

Trying moving other electric items to different outlets. Maybe there are something on the same phase that is overpowering the system and causes the breakers to trip.

A lot depends on exactly what it is that is tripping.
Is it the main (separate) breaker, the smart meter outside, an individual circuit breaker, or the earth leakage (RCD) breaker?
My guess is that it’s the earth leakage breaker, in which case you have a faulty appliance. This is most likely an appliance which contains a heating element, such as a hot water boiler or one of your radiators, but it could be a faulty wiring circuit. I’ve even seen it where a dead cockroach has shorted-out the back of a socket.
However, without more information about exactly what it is that’s tripping and needs to be reset, all of this is speculation.

If you are happy that it is not from overload and it is happening mostly at night then it would point to either one of the radiators or something else that cuts in and out during the night like your fridge or your water heater or a light etc

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the advice and knowledgeable comments.
It is the switch on the fuse board inside that keeps tripping.
The radiators are brand new and the fridge is under a year old too.
Overnight what’s on is; radiators, boiler, fridge and bathroom mirror light.
Any further advice greatly appreciated.

“The switch on the fuse board” tells us nothing useful.
We need to know if it’s the RCD, an MCB or the main breaker. If you can’t tell the difference between the three then post a photo.

If the radiators are new it could be an overload issue when the boiler comes on. Put a timer on the boiler to only come on during the day for the hours you need it (showers) and see if that solves it tripping during the night.
Happy in the sun.

Make sure no one else is connected to "your" electricity supply, you will be suprised, as this does happen.........often.
