Cost of tiling in Spain
Cost of tiling in Spain
by Mac3blade » Sun Jan 26, 2020 12:16 pm
Last year, we planned to tile the walls in our galley. We chose the tiles and then started to look for someone to put them up.
We were SHOCKED with you quotations. One Spanish man quoted €1400. There is one wall about 18 feet long and 7 feet high, two door ways so few tiles in those area and the other wall to be tiled from roof to worktop only. We got some other quotes for less but time ran out and we didn’t get the tiling done.
Meanwhile, at home, we redid our bathrooms and had them fully tiled including floors. £15 per sq meter and a superb job too. Why are we being overcharged in Spain? I honestly thought €500 would have been the charge. Do the Spanish all think we are loaded? There must be some very rich Tiler’s if they can earn €1400 for 2 days work or maybe 1 day’s depending on how straightforward the job is.
What do you think?

That sounds very high for Spain?
However, in the 90's when floor tiling took off in the UK we were paying over £5000 to tile restaurant floors only 2750 sq ft.That was labour only as we supplied the tiles. To cap it all the tilers wanted labourers provided as they said they only laid tiles that were stood boxed next to them they wouldn't move tiles or sweep the floors.
And they left the empty boxes.
Nice work if you can get it-in demand price went up.
Remember the hod carriers on £50K a year at the same time?

Did that include the tiles or labour only?

Did you ask the tiler what he was quoting for ? your walls might not have been straight and needed skimming (,not many internal walls are plumb in spain ) the tiling surface might have been flaky needing more preparation ,2 doors means lots of cuts , different type of tiles ,there's all sorts of reasons , retiling bathrooms is easy if they retiling over existing tiles nothing more straight forward that's what tilers like, straight forward, just try and get quotes from different tilers with a written spec of works to be carried out then you can ask them to all quote for the same.Mac3blade wrote:Last year, we planned to tile the walls in our galley. thought hod carriers went out late 70s , when all this health n safety lark came in , new builds or any build over a certain height with scaffold , and bricks n blocks and mortar up on a fork lift as required by the brickie's, instead of a hod carrier up a ladder, never knew any hod carriers on £50k a year well not up north anyway , thought a 2 & 1 gang paid the hod (2 brick layers and 1 hod carrier), or a really good hod could keep a 3 & 1 gang going in good weather and were much sought after, from my experience anyway.

It depends who you get, if they are registered autonomo or not, you have tax to add on here, which is 21%, that’s what pushes the price up and sometimes, depending what materials you’re using, they are more expensive here. Charge, as a rule of thumb, should be about €40 per m2 but that does depend on what prep work is needed. Hope this helps.
