Two weeks back, Infomir, a popular set-top-box manufacturer announced their intention to place blocks to pirate IPTV domains. Infomir stated that they only wanted to comply with the current EU and US legislation on copyright protection, and that the pressure from copyright holders left them no other option. As is always the case with such lockdowns people find a way to get around them sooner or later, and it seems that a Reddit user named Thr0wawayicus already did, as he shared the news of his own custom firmware for all Infomir models.

Infomir had made no revelations on how they would impose URL blocks on their TV boxes, fearing that any disclosures on the technical side would undermine their actions. Tech-savvy users, however, focused on the content of the latest firmware updates and what differentiated them from the previous, ‘unlocked’ versions. What “Thr0wawayicus” discovered when he used the Wireshark tool to monitor the packet traffic of the box, was an encrypted access over an HTTPS connection that created a file called ‘dls.backup’. This particular file was not to be found in earlier firmware versions, so he decided to investigate it further. As he discovered, this file contains a URL blacklisting content, playing the dual role of prevention and activity storage for future updates blocking.

Infomir are indeed blocking urls that include mag made by infomir, simple fix to older models is to turn of updates in settings.

A lot of IPTV suppliers are stopping MAG users from 2021 This is not related to the Informir statement they issued last year regarding copyright.

The design of MAG boxes cause a huge security risk to IPTV providers and a lot of providers are updating their security for MAG boxes, the older boxes will no longer work on SSL. Therefore a lot are saying that they will no longer support MAG boxes end off.

A lot of providers will still support MAG boxes in the future, so the answer is change your provider.

As my colleague sells MAG boxes he is well aware of these current issues and can always offer help and advice if needed through me.

Unfortunately they can bypass the 'turn off' autoupdate option - and do! We have received calls from clients of different service providers, that seem to have had this type of issue.

We've seen a few issues for quite some time with MAG boxes and security. Currently there are now better boxes out there other than the MAGs, that simply do a better job, without such security risks. Also other equipment you can add a VPN in, if needed adding further security, which you cannot do on most MAG boxes. 5 years ago - it was MAG for robust user system, things have moved on now and other companies can offer a similar/better user experience, without the downside mentioned.

Older MAGs - up to 322/349 are ok - but there are security issues with any of the newer ones starting '4' - they do work with most suppliers - but there is the security blocking risk that others mention.

Another option for existing MAG users - or for those wanting more privacy from their ISP - is to use a VPN service - you can purchase a 'flashed' VPN router - which you connect all devices in your house to. Alternatively, if looking for a replacement unit for your old MAG box, do not buy another MAG box, as others do offer an option to add in a VPN if required (without needing a VPN router).

If you look at the back bothered a hole big enough for a pin to go in . It's the reset button. Have the unit on .then If you put a pin in and feel around for a click sound . When found push and hold while watching your screen until the box restarts.

the reset button is not on the back it is at the back of the AV port and only use a wood toothpick or you will be wanting a new box
