Transfer of car to Spanish plates

Postby CarolValerie » Wed Apr 05, 2023 10:18 am

Hi
We want to buy a car that is on dutch plates so needs to be changed to Spanish plates. Who is responsible for this. The seller or the buyer?

Can’t imagine the seller wanting to get involved in this procedure. It can be difficult and expensive depending on several factors. You should speak to a specialist company before buying any foreign registered car.

Try http://www.spanish-number-plates.com. Very professional company and will give you free advice and costs before you buy the car.

Plus if the car is still on Dutch plates you would have to go through the import vehicle procedures, not just a case of changing plates.

Either the seller should do it before selling or you could contact one of the several companies in the area who do this and they will tell you what is involved.

You will have to do the import yourself. It is a bit time consuming but not very difficult. You are better off getting one of the companies specialising in it to do it for you. There is a company opposite the ITV Centre in Torrevieja who come well recommended called:

TIV-Control Register
Av. los Nenúfares
965 70 94 00

They will need all the car details Registration Cert/log book before they can give a price. You can email them at [email protected]

The good thing with a Dutch car is that everything is similar to Spain re lights so you won't have any extra costs with replacing them. The price to import will depend on year and emissions.

There is a good guide here from Caeser Insurance. I did notice this bit which says you must be the legal owner of the car before you start the importing process. So you would have to get the Dutch(?)owners to register the car in Holland in your name before you start doing anything with the car. That should be an easy process for the seller.

I bought a left hand drive car in the uk on ok plates and took it to spain. I got it registered in Spain by a company. They charged me around 1000 euro for the whole thing, that included a new ITV test.
The guy who done it all fof me I think went back to uk.
