Hello, we're in process of purchasing a 2 bed bungalow. We've read that when contracting to an electricity supplier you should do so to suit your needs.
Does this mean that you need to predict how much you are likely to use and set up a contract for that amount of provision ? It will initially be a holiday home so haven't a clue at moment.
Or is what we've read not correct ?

Your solicitor will change all the utilities into your name as part of the contract.
I would just let things ride for a while to see how you get on.
In basic terms you pay for how much electricity you can use at any one time in your house.
This is sometimes referred to as the ‘potencia’ and will typically be 3.45 kW or 5.75 kW.
This is always shown on your electric bill, so wait until you get your firsts months bill and you’ll see what yours is

As a guide, the following is typical contracted power in Spain.

Small Home - Contracted power 3.45 kW
Medium Sized Home - Contracted power 5.75 kW
Larger Home - Contracted 10.35 kW
The larger your contracted power, the more appliances you can run at the same time.

However, having a larger contracted power also increases the cost of your bills so it makes perfect sense to adjust your contracted power so it is a more accurate reflection of your personal energy usage.

Smaller homes and families may find it more practical to have a lower contracted power of around 3.45 kW than say a large family running a lot more appliances at once who may need 5.75 kW.

If you find that your power keeps tripping when you are running certain appliances at the same time, it is an indication that your contracted power could be set too low. This would mean that you would either need to increase it, which would increase your bill, or stop running certain appliances at the same time.

Getting your contracted power right can be one of the best ways of reducing your electricity bills here in Spain.

On top of that you have different tariffs.
You can have a stable plan one price for all electricity used.
Cheaper night rate( which runs right through till midday or 1pm depending on the time of year.
8 hours cheap - you can choose any 8 hours
Government tariff, which they tried to place everyone on a couple of year ago. Price per unit varies per hour, per day and although there recommended set high low and very low periods, there was a crazy period last year when the highest costs were overnight in what was supposed to be the very cheap period.

Some other suppliers will give you free electricity for one day.

Sort out all the other things you need to do when first purchasing a house and then change your bill. With electric being billed monthly it’s fairly easy to work out your usage per month.

in addition to that put your water heater on a timer , so it heats between. perhaps 0600-0800. and not during meal times etc .
