correct. When Britain was a member of the EU it got the chance to join Schengen nut declines. Only two countries did not join Britain & Ireland, both felt being islands they could control their own borders.Ov3rdal3 wrote:Its nothing to do with Brexit, its Schengen, which comprises of a number of non EU Countries

Nevertheless it's Brexit which has put paid to staying in Spain virtually as long as you wanted and cemented the 90 day rule.

So Ginger is correct ,when the U.K.was a member of the E.U. We did not join the Schengen Agreement ,
so the 90/ 180 always did apply ,but Brits being Brits ,as usual don’t think that foreign countries laws apply to them ,so just lived under the radar in Spain ,as the authorities turned a blind eye ,until we decided to leave the E.U. then things changed I.e. passport stamping and checks at passport control .
So in that sense ,Brexit changed the scene .as we have seen with the British driving licences debacle ,
where as stated ,a number of Brits decided the Spanish driving licences laws didn’t apply to them !

You need to to check that. No non-EU/EEA countries are in Schengen. Some are not in Schengen but no countries outside EU/EEA are in Schengen.
Prior to Brexit it was the same rules for UK, the 90 days at one go but not in a 180 day period. It applied to everyone, Schengen or not. However, you can register a longer stay if in the EU as long as it doesn't exceed 180 days in one year.
Coming from UK prior to Brexit you could stay 90 days without registering your presence. You could then leave for a short while and then come back for another 90 days without registering provided the total did not exceed 180 days in that year.
This option is no longer available to those outside the EU/EEA.

The 90 in 180 days does not apply to any EU/EEA member. The 90 days at one go does but the 90 in 180 rule only applies to 3rd countries which are outside the EU and the EEA.
