LEMON TREE PROBLEM
LEMON TREE PROBLEM
by cdavey » Fri May 19, 2023 10:23 am
We have just heard from a friend in Quesada that the fruit on our lemon tree is turning black and dropping. Has anyone else got the same problem? Is there a solution?
Many thanks

This might help C
Citrus black spot (CBS) is a citrus disease caused by the fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa (previously known as Guignardia citricarpa). This fungus affects citrus plants throughout subtropical climates, reducing both fruit quantity and quality.19 May 2021

Our lemon tree is about three years old and we are getting our first crop of lemons , a couple are already ripe and the rest still green and growing
No sign of this disease thank goodness

Thanks for this. Ours is over 20 years old and has produced masses of lemons over the years. I will be sad if it has to go.

Hi Gustav - thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it’s a holiday home so can’t get it sorted immediately. I have contacted a gardening company who will hopefully take a look, fingers crossed.

Fruit trees are being attacked by cochineal aphids at the moment. You will see lots of small white fluffy spots on leafs and stems. The leafs get covered in a sticky black layer which is the excitement of the aphids. You can get a spray from the garden centre to combat the spread.

We get this on some of the oranges on our other more mature tree , saying that they are mostly tangerines now , i dont know what happened as the main crop used to be just oranges with a few sour tangerines, now there are more tangerines than oranges
And we get three crops a year sometimes, or so it seems

Good post and suggestions.
Must admit our lemon tree was about 13 yrs old as well and we cut it back very severely, it was almost scalped.
Looked sad but by spring it was coming back to life and lasted another 5 yrs until we did a garden make over and it was removed.
Others have been placed in different areas.

Thanks for this Willemite (and for all other replies). I will cut it back when we arrive and then spray and hope for the best.

Depends when you arrive,
Don't cut it back at the height of summer, they will bleed to death,,
The time has passed for cutting citrus groves back;
Google lemons trees in spain advice available
