Businesses still trying to recoup their losses after covid. Cash only helps as they can hide it from the taxman.

Within UK, shops perfectly legally entitled to insist on either cash only or alternatively plastic only.

They should have signs up so we know. In future, I will ask beforehand and if a cards not accepted I'll go somewhere else.

Cash is king. Why should banks make millions just for card payments. If you you stop using cash - it will be card only. No more pocket money for your children/grandchildren etc. just more control over you.

I always pay by cash when out eating and drinking. Old habits die hard. Always like money in my pocket. Unusual for cash never to be accepted.
Cards for the weekly shops, petrol and buying household stuff.

Well said, Lynne1. Not all businesses insisting on cash are trying to avoid paying their taxes!
We go to an excellent restaurant in Guardamar which had no help whatsoever from Sabadell when they were trying to recover from the damage inflicted on their business by Covid. The bank fees they were being charged for customers paying by debit or credit card were (are!) extortionate. So now they ask customers to pay by cash or by Bizum, a free payment system supported by most Spanish banks. As long as you have a Spanish IBAN and mobile phone, you download the app to make payments via your mobile - all transactions require a password, so it's a secure system.
I agree that shops and restaurants should have signs that detail their payment options, but many of us could do a lot more to help local businesses, because they're not getting any help from the banks!
