car insurance in UK for ex pats
by Dougl01 » Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:36 am
Hi Can anyone tell me of a car insurance company that will insure me in the uk please? I have my own car there but it would appear that as soon as I say I am no longer a British citizen they will say we cannot help you. I have a full clean EU Spanish license that I exchanged when we became residents here in Spain. thank you

Is the UK car parked at a UK address with relatives/friends? It may be cheaper to get yourself added as a named driver onto an existing UK insurance policy with a UK address. This wouldn't be considered "fronting" as you would probably only be visiting the UK for short (ish) visits as a Spanish resident.
BTW You are still a British citizen, unless you now have a Spanish passport.

We use Keith Michaels
https://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/expat-car-insurance/
I've never found another. I've asked on here before and nobody was able to suggest an alternative that they used. If anyone can do that now it would be helpful to have more than one option.

'Fronting' is the act of insuring a car in tha name of someone other than the principal driver so yes, unless said friend or relative were in fact regularly using the car such an arrangement would absolutely fall under the definition.Paul58 wrote:This wouldn't be considered "fronting" as you would probably only be visiting the UK for short (ish) visits as a Spanish resident
Re Keith Michael's they themselves say
"Expats living abroad who have a car in the UK will need to have a residential address in the UK in order to insure it. If you need to insure a car in the UK while you are abroad, but no longer have a UK address, get in touch with the team at Keith Michaels to find out how we can help."
That last sentence implies that whatever "how we can help" means it will almost certainly involve subterfuge of some sort or another and insurers are not stupid so in the case of a claim the truth will out.

We are fortunate to still have a residential address in the UK, but if the OP doesn't then the only way to find out whether they can help is to contact Keith Michaels and discuss their specific circumstances as suggested.

While there are certain rare circumstances in which it's possible to be deemed resident in two places at the same time (but not tax resident) the average Brit resident in Spain will not, and cannot, have a bona fide 'residential address' in UK.
The clue is in the word 'residential'.
The likk given by jpeg seems to be applicable to people returning to UK to live not those temporarily visiting.

'Residential' as in somewhere you can reside rather than, for example, commercial. It's nothing to do with where you pay taxes. The Keith Michaels insurance is specifically for non-resident British people with a UK residential address.

I forgot about these jpeg. I have contacted them before. I have attached their response which says they can insure you if have a fixed UK address (I took the term 'fixed address' to mean a home you own permanently, rather than rent, which they were happy with). They only provide new quotes online, not by phone, and they need to see proof of address and proof of no claims which are both less than 3 months old before they'll even provide a quote. I found it so long-winded to get a quote that I had doubts about how I would get on if I ever needed to make a claim. However, they may be worth a try if the OP is more patient than me.
