Letter from police for family to visit

I have just read that family and friends who come to stay with us need to have a letter obtained from the police with details of our address in Spain and an invitation to stay. This will cost over £70 and will be asked for when entering Spain and having passports stamped. It will not be required if staying at a hotel, Has anyone else heard about this or been required to produce a letter? This was an article in The Daily Star.

Google. letter required for visiting family in Spain. Id seen this ages ago and didn't really take any motice but I know loads who have come over just recently and have never had the letter or been challenged about it.

not required in Alicante region

My son and daughter came over to stay last week. No such letter was required.

Don't believe anything you read in that rag

Is it definite that this letter is not required at Alicante Airport? My Daughter us arriving end of August so I want to be sure.
