And therein lies the lesson. Brits are happy with a pittance.

The French had the right ideas, the British complain, but nothing else. Indeed seem happy to be fleeced by the Etonian mafia.

Which is exactly why the Tories will never increase it.

I think it was increased by over 10% by the Tories this year.

And we're looking at probably another 7% odd next April so with the 3% or so 2022 rise that will make around 20% over 3 years.

I'm no defender of this government but for those who blame everything on them recall that it was Gordon 'prudence' Brown who, by abolishing dividend tax credits for pension funds in his 1997 budget, set the scene for the demise of so many final salary pension schemes.

For the general public it went largely unnoticed but as I recall from the time at a stroke it meant that contributions to schemes had to rise by some 20% simply to stand still.

State pensions were also left to wither dramatically until 2010 when the then coalition government introduced the triple lock since when it had risen by around 36% or 43% if you include the anticipated rise for 2024.

You need to remember, the 10% increase is in reply to failed government monetary policy that saw inflation rise to a 40 yr high and the economy crash under Truss , almost overnight.

Previously, the Triple Lock was on average about 3% pa since introduction.

As I've said, I smile wryly when I see that British folk are being thankful for their lot and being happy that they can apply for means tested benefits to support their golden years. Recent reports had a quarter of UK pensioners living in poverty. It is utterly bonkers.

Yet, typically British, I suppose.
