Hi

Asking for a friend, who will be 70 in a few months time.

Do you automatically need a medical when renewing at 70,and is this with your Doctor or an independent Medical Examiner ?

If not your Doctor, is the medical booked when making the appointment for the licence renewal ?

Finally what medical conditions if any need to be disclosed, assuming there may have been changes since the last licence was issued ?

Sorry about all the questions , the procedures may seem somewhat daunting to those of a certain age I'd imagine.

Any input,would be appreciated.

First of all the expiry date is not necessarily aged 70, although it is for many, so check. If they go to Clinica La Siesta it is a 'one stop shop' for everything. Just take your current driving licence and TIE. It costs €60. You can go there up to 3 months before the expiry date. After the reaction tests and photograph the doctor will see them, do a sight test and ask everything he needs to know. It all takes 20 minutes. You can phone or WhatsApp to book. They speak English. Other places are available.

Just a final quick question,if anyone has any views on this ?

Would it be a good move to see your own GP before going to renew the licence,so that the Medical Examiner at say La Siesta has your relevant medical history and opinion of your normal GP ?

Just a thought ?

Read the last sentence very ambiguous. I am 87 and my licence was granted for another 5 years

I remember you saying that over a year ago on another thread when you were 86. More relevant are the others over 70 who are still reporting receiving more than two years since May 2023 when the article was last updated. It's hard to know what to believe, but these reported rule changes are very recent if indeed they have yet commenced. I certainly think the more frequent assessments are appropriate the older you get if the fatality statistics quoted are correct.
