Renewing Spanish driving licences.

I was chatting with some friends the other day and I happened to mention that my driving licence was due for renewal in October.

To my surprise they said that they didn't know they had to renew their licence.

Have you got it with you I asked,

Yes. I'll show you.

Turns out it is due for renewal in two weeks time!

Later on he texted me to say his wife's expired a year ago!

Please be aware that you should check the expiry date of your licence.

Thank you for listening

:text-goodpost: I think a lot of people don't realise there is maximum of 10 years on a photo driving licence, much like a passport, so it's definitely worth checking before the police do it for you on a routine stop! I recently renewed mine and was given another 10 years. My wife was given 4 years.

Don't forget that under recently introduced rules over 70's now get a maximum of 2 years on renewal however at the discretion of the medical examiner annual renewal may be mandated.

My licence runs out when I am 85 next week. I have just had my medical and been given a FOUR year renewal ! Only condition is that my max speed has now been restricted to 100 kph !
One learns something new everyday with Spanish laws !
Safe driving.

The new rules from the DGT is that the medical assessor may make observations that will affect the use of the driving licence.
Whilst most places are saying the test must be done every 2 years over 70, loads of people are reporting they are getting 3, 4 or even 5 years when renewing so it must depend on the results of the medical.

My wife, aged 75, renewed hers in June and, like you, also got 4 years but with the stipulation that she cannot drive more than 200km in one day though no restriction on speed.

Mine isn't due until next year and it will be interesting to see what they do with mine as I almost failed the last one due to dodgy hearing in my left ear. The doc said he'd recommend 4 years but the licence came back with the full 5 years although other classes, such as over 9 seats etc, was only valid for a further 2 years. Not that I drive vehicles over 9 seats.

Did they also state you can only drive a certain distance away from home, something like 40kms? Dad's was that and I think speed of 70 or 80 max?
