Third Party liability insurance for all dogs

Third Party liability insurance for all dogs

Postby OldSalt » Tue Aug 22, 2023 9:38 am

Hi
I have just become aware that from the 28 Sep a new law comes into effect that requires all dog owners throughout Spain to have 3rd party liability cover for their pet. Previously this could have been covered my the normal home insurance. However, i understand that there will now be a need to cover the pet separately. Further it will be difficult to get the cover for animals over nine years old.
I am not resident in Spain but spend three month periods here.
I would be grateful if any one has any further information on this subject
Thanks in anticipation

I rang my home insurance, and was advised we were covered. She emailed me my policy documents and yes I am coveted. There are a lot of exceptions like the size weight and neck measurements of the dog. Would suggest you check with your insurance provider. Hope that helps.

I believe that to get public liability insurance your dog must be microchipped. I also think that in most cases home insurance does cover this, though of course you need to check.

Hi all,

Dogs should be covered under household insurance - a valid pet passport will be required I think and there are conditions regarding weight etc also.

I recommend speaking with Donna at Rightmove who looks after our insurances for us and has dealt with this matter for Benny our Frenchie.

Her number is 966 716 410 and email is [email protected]

Kind regards

Paul

I asked at Rojales town hall whether they would accept an addition to your home insurance policy or whether it had to be a separate liability insurance. I was told they did not have a policy decision yet but when they do it will be on the Council website. Personally I think it is a bit of a joke since 95 % of dogs would probably just lick you to death and are not aggressive. I understand the need when it come to large dogs used to patrol property gardens (against burglars). I suspect there will be more abandoned dogs as people refuse to pay and I can't see this being policed either.

My house insurance is with Generali. I contacted Spanish Life insurance brokers to ask if I was covered. They said not, but added it free of charge. The only condition was that my dog is not considered a dangerous breed.

I'm with them also David and Asbo is a Staffy so on the dangerous dog list it costs us an extra €12.00 on our house insurance and he's covered for €315.000
