If a uk citizen passport holder,dies in spain, resident or non resident,
Does the passport need to travel with the body for repatriation,obviously there would be paperwork, but is the passport needed?even if its out of date,
Or does the body just become an item for transport, like a parcel with paperwork,
I know no passport needed to take ashes back just paperwork from funeral director stating what they are,

HM Passport Office has information on what to do with a passport when the passport holder has died. If you repatriate the person who died to the UK, you may need their passport to do this. If so, you should cancel their passport after repatriation has taken place.

Experienced this 4 years ago, passport goes in coffin ( has clear envelope so it can be viewed without opening.)

Think they have to check it's the right person. I know you have to give the hospital a passport when somebody dies and I think it's so the undertaker can check they are taking the right person. So maybe the same

Dunno about the checking. There was a courtcase reported lately in Ireland where the family on opening the coffin of their deceased father, who had been repatriated from Lanzarote to Ireland, found the body of somebody else. https://extra.ie/2023/07/27/news/courts ... in%20Spain.
