Converting a manual winding canopy to automatic

Converting a manual winding canopy to automatic

Postby telmel » Fri Nov 03, 2023 10:35 am

I had to wind my 8X4 canopy in yesterday because of the high winds and when i went to wind it back out again this morning the winder was sticking on a nut close to the mechanism, something spring loaded has moved , i managed to open it but with a struggle
This then got me thinking of converting the manual winder to an automatic one, adding a motor to my existing awning
I have no idea of price, i just know to buy one already fitted with this is a lot more expensive than a manual operated one
I have read some articles where people say they regretted having an automatic winder because if they go wrong it is expensive to repair or replace
Has anyone had one converted and if so could you let me know the approximate cost ?
TIA

Electric ones have a motor built into the roller itself so you would need to change that completely.

Automation is a separate function provided by an external wind and/or rain sensor.

I've seen a guy , put the manual winder attachment cut down into the end of a battery powered drill and wined his in that way, took him seconds

That was ingenious G, but it imagine it would put a strain on the chuck and motor
I think you can buy DIY conversion kits but i would prefer a company fitting one , thats why i was wondering if anyone has had one fitted
cheers

You don't need to replace the whole unit. The motor is situated inside the tube that the fabric sits on. If you contact Toldos4sun Rafa will be able to help you.

I decided to do the same changing from manuel to motor with remote control. I had Toldos Guardamar, who fitted the awning and it was €800 but well worth it. Would have been cheaper if I'd had moter from the start!!

I believe you can get an auxiliary motor to fit to a manual awning
Mine is fairly new so i dont want to go to the expense of replacing it completely with a new motorised one, just someone to fit a motor and find out the price
cheers

None of the options suggested address the OPs desire for an automatic system.
