Scam Beware

Scam Beware

Postby pedrosloggett » Mon Nov 06, 2023 3:55 pm

Just wanted to make everyone aware of a sophisticated scam.

Yesterday I received an e-mail supposedly from a friend in U.K. saying that they were having problems buying an Amazon gift card for a friend and could I get it for them. Everything about the e-mail looked totally genuine. Address correct etc.
Of course would help a friend. When I asked for the details they gave me a name and e-mail and wanted £200. I was suspicious because of the amount. I contacted the friend via an alternative e-mail asking if the e-mails had come from them and the reply was yes. Not satisfied I sent a watsap and my friend said that they had not contacted me.
Both e-mail accounts have been hijacked and diverted. Even though I sent a message directly to my friend they did not receive it but the hijacker did.

So how many more friends of your friend fell for the scam from both of his hijacked email accounts.

It’s £200! Surely any ‘friend’ would phone you to ask for a favour like this? The very fact it’s emailed should tell you it’s a wrong un!

It's clever because they don't ask for an amount in the first instance. Like all good scams they lead you along a bit at a time.
